I think one of the goals of society should be that someone who requires expensive medicine and a lot of care can live an amazing life, the longest life they possibly can, with dignity, even if they have no friends or family or anyone who cares enough about them to help. the goals of a society should be to make life better than if we are alone, society should want life to be as good as possible for as many people as possible, and those goals should account for people not having social support networks.
social life aside, the most hated or ignored person in town should be able to live as good and fair and just of a life as the most loved person in town. survival needs to stop being a popularity contest.
surivial should stop being a privilege
“Think of the two major possibilities here: Either the studios owe untold millions to their talents and paying it out will decimate their stock prices, or they owe so little because there really is no money in streaming and the bubble of their entire 21st century business model will burst in spectacular fashion. And make no mistake: this is a bubble. This is the inevitable climax of a stockholder-driven hunger for infinite growth, despite the fact that, by design, such a thing cannot and should not exist. The infection of Wall Street has overwhelmed the entertainment industry beyond repair, leading to cultural vandals like David Zaslav to be appointed with the callous duty of strip-mining decades’ of artistic beauty for pennies of tax write-offs. The past and future are frivolous in comparison to the short-term demands that the line keep going up.”

Genuinely and unironically my philosophy abt music has expanded to “stop writing off music because it’s from a specific genre” and I think that could be applied to most mediums actually
Is country music really all bad or are you only catching snippets of christonationalist propaganda on the radio? Are horror movies always shallow torture porn or are you just thinking of trailers you saw for slasher movies? Are fantasy novels only for kids or was the last one you picked up Harry Potter? Is anime always fan service or are you just running into ecchi clips online over and over and over? Are you looking for good media or are you finding bad media and considering it representative?

You know, if we DO make contact with aliens within the next hundred years-ish, enough people are going to give the Vulcan salute to the first alien they see in real life (whether out of quivering excitement, lol memeitude, or sheer awkward, panicked grasping for the one prominent alien greeting nested in the social conscious) that there’s a solid chance that it becomes a thing we’re known for as humans.
Live Long and Prosper, my friends.
Leonard Nimoy would openly, unironically weep with joy if that happened.
He helped develop the Vulcan salute based on what he saw certain people doing during services at his temple. The splayed fingers represent the Hebrew letter shin ש, and the men (I don’t know if they are rabbis) do it with both hands. It represents a blessing.
In an interview, Nimoy mentioned how delighted he was that people the world over greeted each other with “the Vulcan salute,” because it meant “they were going out and blessing each other.”
I’ve always been an atheist, but I still think it’s a lovely sentiment to greet someone with “May you have a long and bountiful life, and I wish for good things to happen to you.”
It’s an excellent greeting.
It’s non-threatening. You not only can’t hold a weapon in that hand, the position itself is awkward enough to be useless for combat. It’s not something that easily switches to a punch or strike.
It doesn’t involve touch contact - avoids both cultural barriers to touch and problems of disease or incompatible skin types. (Don’t have to shake the hand of the volcano aliens.)
It’s clearly deliberate, unlike some kinds of bowing. And it can be mirrored by a wide range of body types, even if they don’t have “hands” or “fingers” - an octopus-being that holds up a tentacle in response would be recognized.
And the sentiment it conveys (the Vulcan version; I have no idea about the original Jewish meaning) is likewise pretty universally acceptable.
It’s the Priestly Blessing (although in some Reform synagogues the rabbi will do it rather than calling up all congregants of priestly lineage to do it–i.e. everyone whose last name is Cohen or Katz or Kaplan or whatever is supposed to go up and collectively bless the community together).
The words match the oldest excerpt of the Bible found by archeologists, on amulets in grave goods dating from before the big redaction project that actually produced the Bible in its written forms. (NB: Jewish amulets usually take the form of written text; this is even more true in the modern era.) There is a real sense in which this blessing predates Jewish religion as we usually understand it.
The translation is “May HaShem bless and keep you, may HaShem’s face shine on you and show you favor, may HaShem lift his face to you and give you peace.”
In the Jewish religious context, “may HaShem bless and keep you” means, like, may God decide that you’re going to keep living a while longer. So the benediction literally means Live Long and Prosper in Peace.

baby its scary outside
me in the year 200023 when all life on earth has been eradicated except humans which have since then radiated into thousands of different species to refill the niches left open by the mass extinction and currently theres a giant hulking eyeless slobbering knuckle walking humanoid figure thats been standing outside our concrete protection chamber for the last 3 days and we can hear it breathing we can hear it breathing we can hear it breathing
This will probably fall on deaf ears I’m guessing because the people who should be listening aren’t going to pay attention the reality of what this means
But yeah most people striking don’t even come close to making a proper living wage let alone in the LA area
Are there rich people in the guild? Of course
But that’s not the majority who need the better contracts

“In the instance an employer makes an illegal request for a photograph as part of a job application, you may submit a complaint to the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.” Successful violation fee collections are paid partially to the one who suffered the violation, which in many cases exceeds a year of work at these shit jobs. There’s only two weak points to a corporation, and those are in the budget and in the supply chain. Hit them where it hurts.
Fucking word.

It’s already happening. Like guys I cannot emphasize this enough the studios are going to make content creators the deal of a lifetime because they have a void to fill and those content creators will then be on the do not work list for the rest of their professional lives.
There’s going to be a LOT of attempts to get people to scab.
…People who scab during a strike don’t get to join the union. Ever.
Studios are going to try to claim “hey here’s your chance to get a start on this career.” They lie. This is a chance to end this career. Sure, they can get a few weeks or months work during the strike. Maybe even have a contract for a year or two, if they’re savvy.
And then their career in Hollywood is over. No more work, ever, because they can’t join the union and the studios can’t hire outside of the union.
Oh, and they’ll have trouble getting jobs anywhere else in the entertainment industry, because unions remember who the scabs were.

For Our Lord Sheogorath, without Whom all Thought would be linear and all Feeling would be fleeting -
I have spent. Five. Months. on this art of what I can only call ‘Sheogorath Phase 2’. Not continuously, because I was taking breaks to avoid going crazy, but you can see by the sheer amount of unique patterns and level of detail (all of which was done by hand, though I did copy my work over a couple times once I got the necessary bits of the wing line art done + simplified matters for the foreground/background butterflies) that this was a labor of love… and that I was going to go full in on my love of patchwork coats, given that I haven’t made any Sixth Doctor art for a long time now.
It took almost a month and a half to get just the rough design of the wings functional.Butterflies referenced for the wings - Alpine Black Swallowtail, American Swallowtail, Monarch Butterfly, Spotted Fritillary, Scarlet Mormon Butterfly, Red Spotted Purple (which is more of a black + blue with a touch of orange), Cairns birdwing, Blue clipper, Painted beauty… and that’s even before we get into the dragonflies/damsel flies that inspired the work on those parts of the wings, because I couldn’t keep them all straight beyond the Blue Dazzler Damselfly.
i would be more sympathetic to tumblrs financial troubles if perhaps they got rid of terfs and nazis instead of terminating gay trans and non-white bloggers but thats just my crackpot extremist position on whether we should pity a corporation
